Kid's Skincare 101: Why Should You Moisturize Your Kid's Skin Every Day?
by Renz Paulo Rodriguez | 5 min read
As a parent, it's important to prioritize your child's overall health and wellness. This includes taking care of their skin, which is their body's largest organ. One important aspect of maintaining healthy skin is by moisturizing it regularly. Pediatricians and dermatologists acknowledge that moisturizing is essential for the health of children's skin.
Whether your child has dry, sensitive, or oily skin, there are simple and effective ways to keep their skin hydrated, nourished, and protected. A growing number of dermatologists and skin care professionals are recommending that children should use moisturizers every day—for similar reasons as those for adults.
In this blog post, we'll delve into the basics of kids' skincare and explain the importance of daily moisturization. By following these tips and incorporating moisturization into your child's daily skincare routine, you can help them maintain healthy, radiant, and youthful-looking skin for years to come.

Dry skin is frequently caused by changes in weather, heat, hot baths or showers, harsh soaps, and sun exposure, and it has been shown to be vulnerable to more serious skin conditions. While dry skin is frequently a transient condition, it can be a lifelong condition that varies from person to person. Seeing as baby and children's skin absorbs and loses moisture and water at a faster rate than adult skin, it is especially important to keep their skin moisturized.
Dr. Patricia Farris, a dermatologist in New Orleans and Clinical Associate Professor at Tulane University explains that: “When skin gets dry and cracks, it lets in bacteria and allergens, so it’s really important to keep skin moisturized.” Many people make the mistake of waiting too long to moisturize after taking a shower or bath. The best time to have your child apply moisturizer is within the 3-minute window after taking a shower or bath. Waiting any longer causes their skin to lose precious moisture in the air.
Here are some other importance of moisturization for kids:
#1. Locks in moisture. Moisturizers form a barrier on the skin that locks in moisture which is especially essential for preventing cracking, scaliness, and irritation. Face and body lotions are usually infused with ingredients that also provide additional hydration.
#2. Improves skin hydration. Skin hydrating is important for healthy skin. It’s essential that your child’s skin retains moisture in order to stay healthy and supple, which means moisturizing daily is a must. The first step toward keeping the skin hydrated is applying a moisturizer that works with their unique needs. If they have dry or sensitive skin, they will need something different than someone who has oily or combination skin types.
#3. Strengthens the skin's natural barrier. Skin barrier function is critical in preventing infections and keeping your little one’s skin healthy. It's easy to damage the skin barrier through over-exfoliation, harsh cleansers, and soaps, sun exposure, chemicals in skincare products (like alcohol), stress, or extreme temperatures. If you want to keep your child's skin healthy, then it's important to make sure they moisturize every day.
#4. Provides relief from skin irritations like eczema. The most common form of eczema is atopic dermatitis, which can be extremely uncomfortable. Itchy and inflamed patches of skin are often the main symptoms—and there's no cure for it. Moisturizers can help to relieve these symptoms, though. By applying a moisturizer every day, you'll keep the skin from drying out and cracking open which will prevent infections from forming in your child's skin.
#5. Combats the effects of pollution and the sun. The continuous exposure of skin to the sun, pollution, and dust leads to it getting rough, causing redness and irritation. This habit of using a good and gentle moisturizer every day can help keep skin soft, long-lasting, and radiant. Kids should take care of their skin while they are still young as children are more susceptible to skin problems. Moisturizing the skin reverses this harsh effect.
How to moisturize properly?
- Clean your little one’s skin. You should never apply moisturizer to dirty skin. Before applying the lotion, wash their faces, hands, and feet.
- Apply directly after showering. One of the best times to apply body lotion is directly after showering. The skin has the most moisture when it's wet, and most moisturizers work best when the skin is already hydrated.
- Apply it evenly on the skin. Take the required amount in your hands and spread it evenly on their skin. Gently massage it into their skin until it absorbs.
- Never leave the house without lotion. Apply sunscreen and moisturizer to your kid’s delicate skin every time they leave the house.
- Apply lotion before going to bed. It is also critical that you apply lotion to your kids before going to bed. As a result, the skin will not be dehydrated during the night.
